Nissan aims to sell as many as 2,000 DC fast chargers by 2014

From green.autoblog.com’s Danny King – Nissan is looking to sell as many as 2,000 DC quick-charging stations within the next two years, as the Japanese automaker looks to boost sales of its all-electric Leaf by providing owners an opportunity to almost completely recharge the car in a half hour, Green Car Reports reported, citing an interview with Nissan North America spokesman Brendan Jones.
Nissan is planning to distribute more than 800 “Level 3″ stations, which are based on the CHAdeMO protocol and operate at 480 volts, within the next couple of months, and is planning to sell more than 1,000 by year end, the website said, citing Jones. Nissan may work out an agreement in which its distribution partners would temporarily offer free charging. Many of the charging stations, which can recharge 80 percent of a Leaf’s battery in as little as 30 minutes, will likely be located in urban areas as well as along well-traveled highways like California’s Interstate 5, according to the website.
The automaker made news last fall by saying it would offer quick charging stations for as little as $9,900, or about half the price of the Leaf’s prior quick-charging station. Nissan, which developed its Level 3 charger with Sumitomo, said last September that it planned to sell 5,000 of the compact quick chargers by March 2016 as part of its efforts to accelerate Japan’s charging infrastructure.
Automotive and technology analysts view quick chargers as more likely to be acquired by public entities and businesses, as opposed to private residences, because of their high power requirements and price tag. Such devices can charge a Nissan Leaf from halfway “full” to almost completely charged in about the same time it takes to fill a tank of gas.

Nissan’s 3Q profit up 3.2% on healthier sales
From Freep.com – Nissan‘s quarterly profit rose 3.2% on healthier sales that offset production damage from flooding in Thailand and a battering from the strong yen.
Yokohama-based Nissan on Wednesday reported October-December third-quarter profit of 82.7 billion yen ($1.07 billion), up from 80.1 billion yen a year earlier.
The Japanese automaker allied with Renault of France sold 1.2 million vehicles worldwide during the quarter, an increase of 19.5% compared with the last three months of 2010.
Quarterly sales surged 10.9% to 2.331 trillion yen ($30.3 billion).
“Significant external headwinds, such as the abnormally strong yen and floods in Thailand, challenged us,” said Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn.
“Nissan responded decisively to these challenges, boosted by the strength of our product,” he said.
Nissan, which makes the March subcompact and Infiniti luxury models, kept its profit forecast for the fiscal year through March 2012 unchanged at 290 billion yen ($3.8 billion).
Nissan also makes the Leaf electric vehicle, which it said was the best-selling electric vehicle ever, having sold 22,000 Leaf cars worldwide last year.
Nissan plans to start selling the Leaf in more places, including Europe this year.
The automaker said the dollar was trading at about 77 yen during the latest quarter, plunging dramatically from 83 yen the previous year. A strong yen erodes earnings from Japanese products sold overseas.
The past year has been a challenge for all Japanese automakers after key suppliers were shut down by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan.

Nissan SUV Concept Finds New Path

From Nissan In the News- Developed to introduce a new generation to the proud Pathfinder name, a sleekly designed Nissan Pathfinder concept vehicle was introduced recently at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The show vehicle also provides more than a few clues about the all-new production model, which is slated to reach Nissan dealerships this fall.
“If there is one constant among the first quarter century-plus of Pathfinder’s existence, it has been its ability to innovate, with each generation evolving to meet the changing needs of the customer,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. “With the upcoming, fourth-generation model, we’re about to re-invent Pathfinder again. We’ve created a vehicle with an extraordinary balance of SUV capability, thoughtful technology and premium comfort to lead the segment once again—and help owners accomplish more in the real world, not just off-road.”
As showcased by the concept, the 2013 Pathfinder gets a comprehensive makeover that extends from its aerodynamic and more sculpted sheet metal to its lightweight, unibody construction. The former gives the Pathfinder a less utilitarian appearance that will better match the preferences of today’s customers, with front and rear spoilers, strong wheel arches, a larger greenhouse, and a more sophisticated front fascia and grille that better complement teammates like the Nissan Murano and Nissan Rogue. As for the latter, which marks a return to the unibody design of the second-gen Pathfinder, the result will be notably improved fuel efficiency and driving dynamics, but without a sacrifice in capabilities.
“With the new engine and CVT combination’s unprecedented efficiency, it maintains nearly the same horsepower as the previous generation’s larger displacement V6, as well as a similar driving feel,” added Castignetti, who went on to confirm that: “It also retains its ability to tow boats, jet skis, trailers and a variety of other recreational gear, and its role as an excellent vehicle for unfavorable driving conditions with four-wheel drive.”
The Pathfinder keeps its three-row, seven-passenger cabin, too, although it’s been upgraded for even more versatility—and increased infotainment/connectivity solutions—for the 2013 production model.
And while Nissan didn’t provide specific details, the company indicated that the Pathfinder’s refined six-cylinder engine, mated to Nissan’s next-gen CVT (continuously variable transmission), is expected to deliver a healthy 25 percent jump in fuel-economy over the previous V6.
“The new Pathfinder carries on the tradition of the adventure-ready vehicles that have come before—offering a new level of family enjoyment and engagement that is just right for today’s real-world, everyday uses,” concluded Castignetti. “After more than 25 years, Pathfinder is ready to tackle new terrain and the new challenges of modern family lives.”

Nissan Advances to Become No. 2 Asian Brand in Americas in 2011, Reports Record Sales and Share Growth Across Region
From PRNewswire - Nissan Americas today reported record sales of 1,561,230 in 2011 calendar year for Nissan and Infiniti brand vehicles throughout the region encompassing North, Central and South America – a record year in both market share and volume for Japan’s second largest manufacturer.
The Nissan brand alone gained 0.6 points of market share over the 2010 calendar year and advanced to become the No. 2 Asian automotive brand in the Americas. 2012 Nissan Murano – Refined and smart

From The Indo-Canadian Voice – I’ve always been a big fan of the Nissan Murano since its introduction a few years ago. Its initial styling was years ahead of the competition and Nissan has sensibly toned and refined the exterior look over the years. The current Murano loses none of its impact and remains a stylish, good looking mid-size SUV.
Although it has a flotilla of competitors the Murano has pretty much held it own and continues to be a very attractive buy. The Murano is powered by a single engine choice, namely a 3.5-litre V6 with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that includes manual shift mode and all wheel drive.
Nissan is one of the few manufactures that are actively promoting CVT and it remains a smooth, fuel-efficient transmission system.
For 2012 the Nissan Murano has several changes in its trim line. The S now has a seven-inch information screen and includes 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, fog lights, heated mirrors, black roof rails, privacy glass, splash guards, tire pressure monitoring system, vehicle information centre, electroluminescent gauges, cruise control, Intelligent Key with pushbutton ignition, power windows, tilt and telescopic steering wheel.

Analysts Predict A Booming Auto Market In 2012 (Except In Europe)
From The Car Connection - The dust is still settling from 2011, but early figures indicate that the U.S auto market recorded significant growth over 2010. Analysts at Polk Research say that upward trend will continue across much of the globe in 2012 — though alas, not everywhere.
THE WINNERS
China: Though some have questioned the stability of China’s auto market, Planet Earth’s most populous nation clearly has an appetite for cars. Polk expects the growth rate for 2012 to hit 16% — a far cry from the 32% seen in 2010 or the 59% bump in 2009 (both fueled by plenty of government subsidies), but nothing to sneer at. Interestingly, the strongest demand for cars in China is likely to come from consumers outside major metropolitan centers like Shanghai, implying that sales among city-dwellers have plateaued.
U.S.: While America won’t see double-digit growth, the folks at Polk do expect light vehicle sales to rise a very respectable 7.3% in 2012. The gains would’ve been bigger, but 2011 was a big year for auto sales — around 10.4% as of November — and as a result, many shoppers won’t be back in the market for another year or two.
Luxury: Polk sees the luxury segment picking up speed, particularly in the U.S. Though the interwebs are full of headlines about the still-shaky economy, 2011 may have been just stable enough for affluent shoppers to feel confident again. According to Anthony Pratt, director of forecasting for the Americas at Polk, those individuals are ready to spend again: “More affluent buyers are returning to the market for new vehicles, after three years of spending reductions.”
Honda & Toyota: Polk expects to see Toyota and Honda make big gains in market share in 2012 — though that’s in part because 2011 was so dismal for them. Between the March 11 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami that crippled Japan and the Thai floods that hurt production in the latter half of the year, both automakers experienced heavy setbacks. Polk doesn’t expect Toyota and Honda to regain all the ground they lost, though, thanks to boosted competition from other automakers.
Volkswagen: Look for continued growth in VW’s market share, thanks to big-selling models like the Jetta and the revamped Beetle. The company may meet its 2018 goal after all.
Chrysler, Ford, General Motors: Detroit’s Big Three have all been making steady improvements since emerging from the doldrums of 2008 and 2009. (Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne even seemed a little weepy in praising his employees’ hard work over the past couple of years.) We’ve been impressed with many of the products each company has been offering, and we hope to see their forward momentum continue.
THE LOSERS
Europe: You’re probably well aware of Europe’s financial troubles. As a result of those woes — and the austerity measures being planned to address them — European sales should be flat or down slightly for 2012. However, Polk expects to see the region bounce back slowly in subsequent years.
Japan: Polk doesn’t delve into much detail for Japan, but sales projections for the next few years are fairly flat, running between 4.5 million and 4.8 million units annually through 2016. That may be in part a result of Japan’s economic recovery from the Tohoku disaster, and it may also have something to do with the fact that Japanese youth aren’t especially interested in cars.
Hyundai/Kia: The powerhouse from South Korea has been making big strides in the U.S. and elsewhere recently. But while they’ll continue to sell a growing number of vehicles, their market share will stay relatively flat for 2012, thanks to increased competition.
Polk expects to see continued growth in global auto markets for at least the next five years. Analysts predict 77.7 million sales for 2012, surging to a stunning 96.3 million by 2016. Stay tuned…
